All You Need is Love

This is one of my favorite TED talks …ever.

Saatchi and Saatchi is a mega huge advertising firm, no, they are THEE advertising firm and their CEO global, Kevin Roberts, spends 20 minutes discussing the power of love when it comes to building brands.

Brand building is one of the most fascinating concepts to me.  It requires the perfect recipe of strategy and creativity and is 100 percent manipulated by advertisers, publicists and marketers.  These people create a perception and project it to the public. Basically, they control us.

What is so interesting about this specific TED talk is that Roberts explains this process using the idea of love.  He stresses the importance of creating a brand that is so addictive that people love it, and I mean really love it.

He calls this idea “lovemarks.”

Lovemarks are different for everyone, but the common theme among them is a highly visible, trustworthy and appealing brand.  I have several lovemarks including Costco, Lululemon Athletica and Skinnygirl Cocktails.  I would probably believe almost anything these brands would tell me and I am completely aware of it.

What’s interesting about my lovemarks is that, for example Skinnygirl Cocktails, I don’t event drink it.  I am not quite sure where my intense passion for the brand comes from, but I have somehow become a victim to their advertising.

Twine It, I Found it First

Like many PR enthusiasts, I am always looking for the new cool thing.  Most of the time I stumble upon something awesome and think I am the first person in the entire world to discover it.  Usually its apps, but sometimes its songs.

This weekend I was at a conference for my business fraternity, Pi Sigma Epsilon (represent) and the weekend ended with a banquet and awards ceremony.  At this event there was a photo booth set up as entertainment for all of the members called Twine It.  The booth had a step and repeat themed background with the company’s logo, an easy to use digital camera element and fun props for us to use in the photos.

The photo booth was supplemented with an app that everyone could download and a barcode to scan so that all the photos would stream to everyone’s phones automatically.  For 150 plus Gen-Yers, it was the greatest picture taking concept we had ever experienced.

I’m not sure what the best part is about the Twine It photo booth, but being portable, entertaining and customizable doesn’t hurt.

Just remember when you see a Twine It photo booth at an event in the future, I found it first.


Live Tweet Me

This past weekend, I attended a regional conference for my business fraternity, Pi Sigma Epsilon.  More than 30 members of our chapter traveled to Toledo, Ohio for a three night stay to compete against and network with other chapters.  Being the vice president of public relations, I was live tweeting up a storm.

I tweeted from from our chapter’s handle @PSEOSU during the regional conference and used the hashtag #ilovePSE to connect with other members and chapters participating in the weekend-long conversation.

Throughout the weekend I was able to network with several other vice presidents of public relations where we were able to exchange PR ideas and social media tips.  The conversation shifted to communicating with these specific chapters mostly, mentioning them and replying to their tweets.

I live tweeted several events specifically including workshops, competitions and the closing banquet and awards ceremony.  Live tweeting the event allowed our members who did not attend the conference to feel connected to the event and receive real-time updates.

I think I’ll live tweet again soon.


Hire Me, I’ll be your Publicist

After my amazing summer in Los Angeles interning at an entertainment PR firm, all I want is a cool job.

I sat at a cool desk, at a cool company, in a cool city and yes, I did cool things.

Truly, I was mesmerized by the chaos and intense environment, which is how I realized I really want to do PR.  Now as a senior, coming back to school with so much knowledge and experience about the workforce, I am obsessed with getting a job.

Starting my job search has been one of the scariest and most exciting tasks of my life.  It is the unknown that worries me the most, but I feel lucky to have found my passion so early in life and know exactly where I want to go from here.

Hopefully this time next year I will be enjoying fall in Los Angeles and working in the entertainment industry.  Until then, hire me because I’ll be your publicist.


Pope Francis: The Patron Saint of PR


Personally, I am big fan of Pope Francis and of what he is doing for the Catholic Church.  As a confirmed Catholic and member of generation Y, it’s not hard to believe that I have latched on to him so quickly as an amazing religious leader who accurately represents the 21st century.

His efforts of rebranding and modernizing the Church has earned him some pretty amazing positive press and is saving Catholicism from becoming an outdated religion.

This week an article was posted on PRNewser outlining the ten reasons why Pope Francis is the patron saint of PR; I ate it up.  The pope and PR are my two favorite things so why not recap it for you here?

1. He named himself after St. Francis of Assisi, the original hippie.

2. He auctioned off his harley davidson for charity.

3. He expelled the ‘Bishop of Bling’ from the church for spending more than $40 million on his personal home.

4. He is an advocate for women.

5. He supports the gays.

6. He has severed the Church’s ties with the mafia.

7. He washes prisoner’s feet.

8. His grand entrance as the new pope proved he needs no coaching in media relations.

9. He loves Twitter and knows how to use a hashtag.


10. He doesn’t wear the expensive Prada footwear traditionally worn by the pope.

Overall, Pope Francis has single handedly initiated a rebranding campaign for the traditionally strict Catholic Church earning the Vatican approval from the outspoken and progressive 20 year olds who so often criticize it.



I might be the only person I know under the age of 40 who listens to NPR podcasts, but for a public relations student, it is important to know what is going on in the world.  Between Syria and Kim Kardashian it is a full-time job keeping up with current events and pop culture.

This summer, during my two-hour morning commutes to Los Angeles, I listened to NPR’s “Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me!” a comedy news show.  The show is hosted by writer and comedian, Peter Sagal, with a panel of three guest comedians who play games surrounding the weekly news.  Each show also has guest interviewees who range from actors to politicians and CEO’s.

Reasons why I love this show are as follows:

  • It’s hilarious
  • The guest interviews are always interesting
  • I learn a lot
  • It’s hilarious
  • The news is always current and accurate
  • Did I mention it’s hilarious?

One of my favorite podcast episodes was when Al Gore joined the “Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me!” cast to answer some questions about former president Bill Clinton.  Being that Peter Sagal enjoys hassling each guest regardless of political affiliation, you can guess that the interview was surprisingly entertaining as the host continuously measured Al Gore against his former boss.

Blogging about Tweeting about Blogging

Today I participated in my first tweetchat.  It was a bizarre experience tweeting at strangers, but it sort of gave me good insight.

I joined a chat called #bloggab which is a weekly discussion about blogging, techniques and critiques.  This week, the moderator lead a blog critique where he posted links to several blogs and the chat participants offered advice and constructive criticism to the bloggers.

When I entered the conversation, I posed several questions about blogging sites including the million-dollar question, wordpress versus blogspot.  It was interesting to have so many experienced bloggers offer me insight, which got me hooked into the conversation pretty quickly.  I thought with so many participants my comments might get overlooked, but I seemed to receive very personalized responses.

As the moderator went on post URLs to several blogs, the tweets came pouring in.  Most of the participants seemed to give genuine critiques to the bloggers who provided their work for the chat.  The first blog had great content, but failed to have an “about” page or any sort of definitive introductory to their blog.  This is something the moderator quickly pointed out, which gave me several opportunities to offer my opinion as well.  Other critiques ranged from design and aesthetic appeal to posting too often or too seldom.

Hearing the critiques from other experienced bloggers helped me to understand my personal blog better from a reader’s perspective.  Sometimes it is hard to think about how your content is being received separate from the way you intend.  Overall, I found the tweetchat surprisingly helpful and fun.  I’d like to lie and say it was a one time thing, but I may be looking for other tweetchats in the near future.
